NEW ORLEANS JAZZ FUNERALS

A New Orleans-style Jazz Funeral with a parade band has become increasingly popular in the celebration of the life of the deceased.

Traditionally, the band leads the procession – walking in front of the cortege to the cemetery playing a slow, mournful, spiritual tune, such as The Old Rugged Cross, or Just a Closer Walk With Thee, or Nearer My God to Thee.

Following the burial, the band will strike up with a rousing number such as When The Saints Go Marching In, or Just a Little While To Stay Here, and leads the mourners out of the cemetery.

Of course, there are a number of variations of this format to respect the bequest of the deceased, the requirements of the family, or the constraints of the different locations.

As an option the band can also play during the service whether it be religious, secular or humanist and also afterwards at the wake/reception. The band can vary in size from 3 to 10 musicians
